  • Sir Francis Drake was born in 1541 or 1542 in Tavistock, Devon, England.
  • He was a sailor, adventurer, navigator, politician, engineer, landowner, and a legend.
  • He is best remembered for his involvement in the Spanish Armada in 1588 and for circumnavigating the globe on his famous World Voyage.
  • On 28th January 1596, Sir Francis Drake died of dysentery aged about 55.
  • Drake's circumnavigation began in 1577 and he returned to England in 1580.

Key problems Drake faced on his around-the-world voyage:

1. His crew were mutinous

2. His boat was damaged by storms when it first set out

3. The boat ran aground on a reef on its return to England

4. Many of the crew suffered diseases
