- Sir Francis Drake was born in 1541 or 1542 in Tavistock, Devon, England.
- He was a sailor, adventurer, navigator, politician, engineer, landowner, and a legend.
- He is best remembered for his involvement in the Spanish Armada in 1588 and for circumnavigating the globe on his famous World Voyage.
- On 28th January 1596, Sir Francis Drake died of dysentery aged about 55.
- Drake's circumnavigation began in 1577 and he returned to England in 1580.

1. His crew were mutinous
2. His boat was damaged by storms when it first set out
3. The boat ran aground on a reef on its return to England
4. Many of the crew suffered diseases
